Setting up multiple user accounts in MacOS is sometime a cumbersome situation as nobody wants to share their personal data with others. But what if you can restrict the folders, sites and app that other can access. In such a situation having a single mac computer for the entire family will become a lucrative option.
So, here in this article you get to know that how to create multiple user accounts on MacOS and how to delete administrator or any user account mac that is no longer needed.
But before getting in that how to add another user on mac, let’s first know what the types of accounts available in MacOS are? This will help you to pick the right one depending on the user for whom you are creating an account.
In MacOS, you can create four types of accounts:
Whoever be the first user of Mac will be the administrator of that device. An administrator will manage everything from your system folders to your system apps in Mac. He/She can change the user settings. He is the one who create and delete other users account.
An administrator can share his power with another user by allowing him to create a new administrator account.
In short, an administrator have full control over Mac.
Any mac user who has a standard user account can install apps and change his own settings. But he is not able to change system settings. Neither he can create nor delete other user accounts.
You can allow other users to have a standard account only if you don’t want to place too many restrictions on them.
As the name suggests, you can use this account type when you want to place restrictions on your child’s computer use.
On having a managed account, your child can only see those apps and websites that you specify.
To customize managed account. First go to System Preferences and then Parental Controls.
As you can see, you get a lot of options here like cameras, multiplayer games, iTunes store etc. You can even limit the screen time also.
A user who is having sharing only account, cannot login into the system. They can only get remote access to those shared files whom you grant the permission.
So if you want to share some specific directories without giving your username and password then this is probably the best way for you.
You don’t have to create this account for every temporary user. You have to create such account only if someone wants to use your Mac for short duration, say to, check e-mail or to browse something on the web.
To activate the guest user account, first go to System Preferences and then to User Groups. Now check the box that says” Allow guests to log in to this computer”.
Check the Enable parental controls when you are enabling guest user access. After that specify those restrictions that you want to set up from System Preferences > Parental Controls.
At the initial stage, you will have only one account and that is your primary administrator account. By using this account you can create other normal accounts or administrator account depending on your preference. But the other accounts that you have created cannot add or manage users.
To add new users, first go to System Preferences and then to Users & Groups.
On the left side, you can see a list of users of this device. As you can see, add new ones option is in grey color. To make changes, you have to press the lock button which is available at the bottom-left of this page.
Now you have to enter your password. After doing this, you can see that “+” option on the top of lock is no longer greyed.
Now a form will pop up on your screen. Where you have to input all the details like account type, full name, account name, password etc.
Once you are done with all the entries, click on Create User button.
After that, both accounts will appear on your login screen.
Note: Sharing only account will not seem on login screen.
You can log in to either of your account if you know the password. The account that is now active will have orange checkmark below it.
You can use the gear button which is located next to “-” button. Using this button you can reset the password for any account if the user is not able to recall it.
In the Login Options Section, you can make various settings like whether to display username and password fields. Whether to show password hints or not and many other options.
In Mac, you don’t have to log out if you want to switch to different account. You can run multiple user accounts at once without logging off.
Whenever you create a new account, you can see that Fast User Switching icon gets added to the menu bar. To switch from one user account to another, just click on the user account and enter the password.
If your Mac has TouchID feature, then you can use that too to switch between multiple user accounts.
To use this feature, you have to assign fingerprints to each of your account. Now press the TouchID button when you want to switch.
Whenever you don’t need a particular account, it is better to delete it and not allow it to use your resources.
To delete a user account, click on the “–” button which you can see in the left hand side of Users & Groups section.
Note: You can’t delete an account until the user of that account has logged out.
Now a pop up screen appears, which is asking what to do with the home folder of that deleted account. Choose one radio button and then click on Delete User.
